Being Swallowed Alive

Updated: Sep 21, 2018

Jonah. Being swallowed up. Hardship. When Life it too hard. Staying focused on Jesus. Faith.

Ever feel like life is swallowing you up?

Like Jonah in the belly of that big fish.

Surrounded.

Stuck.

Slowly being absorbed by stomach acid (too much?)

Except I haven’t been running.

Or perhaps I have.

Maybe my heart has slowly been walking away more than I’d like to admit.

Being swallowed.

It’s the feeling that life is passing by.

Like one day you look up and another month has passed without you so much as realizing it had even arrived.

It’s the feeling of running on a treadmill... treading and treading and treading, only to end up where you had started to begin with.

The ground slipping out from under you each time your foot is planted in a new direction.

I want there to be some life altering lesson here, though I’m not sure what it is. What is God allowing me to learn as I wait here, engulfed and overwhelmed?

All I know is, amidst that dark, disgusting place, where the world continued spinning without him, Jonah never lost site of the Lord.

AND, though he was swallowed up, he DID NOT stay that way forever.

Jonah. Being swallowed up. Hardship. When Life is too hard. Faith.

“In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me.

From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry.

You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me;

Jonah. Being swallowed up. When life it too hard. Hardship. faith.

all your waves and breakers swept over me. I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’ The engulfing waters threatened me,the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit. “When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. “Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them. But I, with shouts of grateful praise,

will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”

Jonah 2:1-9
